This Privacy Policy explains how My Witness Tree (“MWT,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use the My Witness Tree website and mobile application (collectively, the “Services”). Because My Witness Tree is built around personal reflection and meaningful experiences, we take special care to handle information thoughtfully and responsibly.
My Witness Tree is designed as a private reflection and journaling tool that allows users to record meaningful experiences, observe patterns over time, and, if they choose, selectively share certain experiences with trusted individuals. This Privacy Policy applies to both the website and the mobile application and describes how information is handled across both platforms.
Our Privacy Commitments
We follow several core principles when it comes to privacy. We collect only the information necessary to operate and improve the Services. We do not access, read, or review your personal journal entries or uploaded media without your explicit consent. We retain personal information only for as long as it is reasonably required for legitimate purposes. We aim to be transparent about our practices, and we respect your right to control your information, including what is shared, what remains private, and what is permanently deleted.
Information We Collect
Information collected through the Services may be provided directly by you, collected automatically as you use the Services, or obtained through third-party services you choose to connect. Certain information is required to create and maintain an account, while other information is optional.
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect basic account information such as your name, password, and email address, and in some cases a passcode. This information is used solely for account creation, authentication, account management, and communication related to the Services. Providing this information is required to create an account.
User Content
The Services allow you to create personal journal entries, reflections, notes, and upload media such as images or audio. This content is private by default. We do not access, analyze, or review individual entries or media for research, analytics, or marketing purposes. Journal entries and associated content are protected using end-to-end encryption, and only you control access to your personal content unless you explicitly choose to share it.
User-Initiated Sharing and Witness Communities
My Witness Tree also offers a private community feature referred to as “Witness Communities.” This feature allows you to selectively share specific experiences with other individual users on a one-to-one basis. Sharing is entirely optional and is initiated and controlled by you.
When you choose to share an experience, the text, images, audio, or other media associated with that experience become accessible only to the recipient you select. You may modify or revoke access to shared experiences at any time. My Witness Tree does not independently share user content, does not make shared experiences public, and does not monitor or review shared content except as necessary to provide the functionality of the Services or to comply with legal obligations. Users are responsible for the content they choose to share and for selecting the recipients with whom they share their experiences.
Biometric Authentication
If supported by your device, you may choose to enable biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, to secure access to your account. Biometric information is processed and stored solely on your device by your operating system. My Witness Tree does not receive or store biometric data.
Payment Information
When you make purchases through the website or complete in-app purchases, payment information such as credit card details is processed by third-party payment providers. My Witness Tree does not store full payment card information. We retain limited purchase records as necessary for transaction history, customer support, and legal or accounting obligations.
Usage, Diagnostics, and Technical Data
As you use the Services, we automatically collect certain technical and usage information. This may include IP address, device type, operating system, app usage data, and crash or performance logs. This information is used to operate the Services, improve stability and performance, enhance security, and prevent fraud or misuse. We may infer approximate location, such as country or region, based on IP address. We do not collect precise GPS location data.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
The website and Services may use cookies or similar technologies where necessary to provide core functionality and improve performance. These technologies are not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Third-Party Sign-In Services
If you choose to sign in using a third-party service such as Apple or Google, we receive basic profile information from that service, such as your name and email address, solely for authentication and account creation purposes.

How Information Is Shared

These providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and may only use it for the purposes of providing services to My Witness Tree.

What We Do Not Do
We do not sell personal data. We do not share personal data for advertising purposes. We do not track users across apps or websites. We do not share personal content between users unless a user explicitly initiates and authorizes such sharing.
Data Retention and Deletion
Personal data is retained only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected or as required by law. Following account deletion or a verified deletion request, personal data is retained for no less than five days and no more than thirty days, after which all entries, attachments, and account data are permanently deleted.
Security
We take reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction. While no digital service can guarantee absolute security, we work continuously to strengthen our safeguards.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws to access your data, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, restrict or object to processing, receive a copy of your data, or withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
Children’s Privacy
My Witness Tree is not directed to children under the age of 13 and does not permit children to create independent accounts.
The Services may allow an adult account holder to create and manage child profiles under their own account. Child profiles are fully controlled by the adult account holder, and children do not independently access the Services. All data associated with a child profile is collected and managed at the direction of the adult account holder.
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children outside of a parent- or guardian-managed profile. Parents and legal guardians may review, modify, or delete child profile information at any time through the controlling account or by contacting us.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If changes materially affect how we process information based on consent, we will request renewed consent where required. We encourage users to review this policy periodically.
